Tuticorin
Tuticorin: All the four workers’ federations functional at the port here have issued a strike notice to the Tuticorin Port Trust management on Tuesday. M. Raveendran, president, Hind Mazdoor Union (HMS), told The Hindu that the entire Class III and IV employees at the port, affiliated to HMS, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), would go on indefinite strike from July 16, to press their demands. The employees took out a procession in the morning from near the V.O.C. Statue situated on the port estate to the administrative office to hand over the strike notice to the Deputy Chairman, A Subbiah. Regarding the demands of the workers, Mr Raveendran said that interim relief should be paid at the rate of 13.5 per cent of the Basic Pay with effect from January 1, 2007, as recommended by the Bipartite Wage Negotiation Committee (BWNC) on March 29 this year. Likewise, difference of PLR (productivity linked reward) should be paid to the workers as per the liberalised provisions of Bonus Act. The Indian Port Association’s recommendations on extension of medical benefits to retired workers on a par with the serving employees should be implemented immediately. Outsourcing of technical and specialized jobs at the port should be discouraged. He said that the unanimous report of the panel constituted by Ministry of Shipping on September 29, 2005, to look into the promotional prospects of Class III and Class IV employees, should be put into practice without any further delay.
