A CRITICAL VIEW: Sukumar Azhikode arrives at the Kerala Sahitya Akademi in Thrissur to inaugurate a seminar on Tuesday.

Thrissur: “Spiritual leaders should reach out to the suffering masses,” said social critic Sukumar Azhikode.

He was speaking at the seminar on ‘Contemporary Spirituality’ organised by the Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sanghom at the Kerala Sahithya Akademi here on Tuesday.

“Mother Teresa was a true ‘mother’ to the destitute children on the streets of Kolkata. But now religious leaders prefer to appear before devotees on brightly-lit stages,” Mr. Azhikode said.

Mr. Azhikode said that there were many words in Vedas and Upanishads, which should be reinterpreted according to the changing times.

Sree Narayana Guru lit the lamp of renaissance in Kerala. One should think how this land has fallen prey to false spirituality, he reminded.

Mr. Azhikode said that teachers of many schools were underpaid. “Many complaints have already been sent to the authorities.” He said that he was planning to approach the court for their cause.

CPI(M) district secretary Baby John presided over the function in which several writers, including Vaisakhan, Asokan Charuvil, Kavumbayi Balakrishnan, N.V.P Unnithiri and N.M.Muhammadali participated.
