ARIYALUR: The Collector, R. Sudalaikannan, directed officials to evolve a strategy to check recurring encroachments. Presiding over a road safety committee meeting here on Tuesday, he said that although efforts were being made from time to time to clear encroachments, the desired goal was not achieved because of re-emergence of the problem. Road accidents were on the rise because of disruption in the wake of widening and strengthening works between Udayarpalayam and Jayamkondam. He suggested felling of trees to prevent accidents and appealed to the police to check overcrowding in buses, especially those plying in the Perambalur-Ariyalur section. The weekly shandy on Sundays posed yet another menace in traffic management, he said, directing the police to regulate the traffic. The revenue and municipal officials should clear encroachments in congested areas. He also directed the Highways Department to set up speed-breakers near Salai Vinayakar Temple at Varanavasi near here. Officials from the police, highways, revenue and municipality participated in the meeting.
