Bank gesture

Minister gives away awards

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, gave away State Bank of India Talent Awards to 39 students who secured three top spots in Plus Two examination in four Government and Government-aided schools in Virudhunagar.

It included a cash award of Rs. 1,001, a joint savings bank account for each student along with one of their parents, and certificate of excellence and an in-principle approval of education loan for them to pursue higher studies. The award is sponsored by the Virudhunagar Branch of SBI.

The branch has also adopted two girl students, Aparna, and Manimegalai, under the Adoption of Girl Child scheme. These two poor children would get all financial assistance to pursue their school and college education.

The Minister appreciated the bank for looking beyond just business and caring for the poor and helping them get education.

Stating that the mindset of parents had changed from accumulating property and wealth for their children, he said they were willing to spend their fortune to educate their wards.

He lauded the teachers of Government schools that were doing a yeoman service by encouraging average students securing high marks in public examination.

The Assistant General Manager, S. Raju, said that the bank was providing help to over one lakh poor students across the country. The Chief Manager, K. Dayanidhi, was present.
