Doctors exhorted to do rural service

Private hospitals told not to prescribe unnecessary tests and tax patients

Members from medical profession, students and social workers felicitated


HYDERABAD: Imploring doctors to serve rural society, Minister for Andhra Pradesh Vaidya Vidhana Parishad and Hospital Services Vanama Venkateswara Rao said MBBS students, after their graduation, should compulsorily serve in the rural areas for at least five years so that they can be aware of the diseases and problems affecting the rural poor.

He regretted that many doctors went on leave when assigned rural postings.

He was addressing a gathering of doctors on the occasion of Doctor’s Day at the premises of Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Tuesday. He also requested doctors from private hospitals not to levy unnecessary expenses on patients by asking them to undergo various tests.

Doctor’s Day is celebrated every year on the birth anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy who was an eminent physician, freedom fighter and also the former Chief Minister of West Bengal. Members of IMA – Hyderabad, on the occasion, felicitated members from medical profession, students and socially-committed citizens working for the betterment of the society.

Former Medical Superintendent of Government Medical Hospital at Malakpet P. Sreelatha was felicitated on the occasion along with P. Indira Devi, who retired as professor from Nilofer Hospital. Founder member of IMA – Ravulapalem branch D.V. Ramana Murthy who retired as Additional Director of Medical and Health services and senior teacher in medical field Antesh Itigi who was Superintendent of Government Medical College at Khammam were felicitated for their selfless service to society.

Social worker Harish Chandra Vidhyarthi, who was the first to complete doctorate in Hindi journalism from Osmania University, was presented citation, a shawl and a memento by the Minister.

The association also presented a cheque for Rs.15 lakh to the family members of K. Ramakrishnayya, ex-president of IMA- Hyderabad, who passed away recently.
