HELPING THE NEEDY: SBI DGM K.Ramachandran Nair (right), giving a cheque to one of the beneficiaries in Chennai on Tuesday. CHENNAI: The IAS aspiration of P. Hemalatha of class VII of Corporation High school in Ganesapuram seemed to gain strength as she was adopted by the State Bank of India. “After I become an IAS officer I will serve the downtrodden with all my heart. I will be grateful to the State Bank of India,” she said. Hemalatha is living with her poor grandmother. “My father married again after my mother’s death and left me with my grandmother,” she said. Hemalatha is one of the six girls adopted by SBI as part of its community banking services. The “Adoption of Girl Child Scheme” of SBI seeks to ensure proper education for poor girl children. The bank meets the entire educational expenses of the girl child. Cheques of Rs.5,000 were handed over to the students at a function organised here on Tuesday as part of SBI’s Bank Day celebrations. The grant will continue every year until the girl completes school education. Handing over the cheque to the children, C.K.Ramachandran Nair, Deputy General Manager of SBI said: “This endeavour will be a platform for higher studies of more girl children.” “One per cent of our profit is being earmarked for community service. We also have an action programme for girl children. Around 10,000 SBI branches adopting four children each is part of our social responsibility,” he added. R. Mohanakrishnan, Secretary, State Bank Staff Forum, advised the students to “focus only on studies and seek excellence in studies. We are here to help you.” SBI was formed on July 1, 1955 and the day is being celebrated as Bank Day every year by the bank. A sapling planting programme was also undertaken throughout the Chennai Circle (Tamil Nadu and Puducherry) in association with the SBI Ladies Club to commemorate the day. J. Chandrasekaran, Chief General Manager of the bank, inaugurated the sapling planting programme at the Local head Office. Tree saplings were planted on the premises of all branches and administrative offices of the circle. Kanchana Chandrasekaran, president, SBI Ladies Club inaugurated the planting of tree saplings at SBI Officers Residential Quarters, Koyambedu.
