Good start: Collector V. Palanikumar commissions a colour doppler ultra sound scanner donated by the Rotary Clubs of Coimbatore at the neonatal ward in the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital on Tuesday.

COIMBATORE: The Rotary Club of Coimbatore Gaalaxy has initiated a project to make improvements to the paediatrics ward at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) at Rs. 4 lakh.

This is part of the 3R’s Project – reducing child mortality, reducing road accidents and rainwater harvesting – of the new Rotary District 3201. The new district has been carved out of Rotary District 3200.

The Rotary District 3201 said in a press release that its Governor Baby Joseph had initiated the project for 100 clubs coming under this district that covered some revenue districts in western Tamil Nadu and a part of Kerala. As for Coimbatore District, 23 clubs would carry out this project.

District Collector V. Palanikumar launched the project at the CMCH on Tuesday to mark the formation of the new Rotary district.

The release said that Rotary Clubs had contributed equipment worth over Rs.1 crore, constructed buildings and provided other facilities at the hospital.

Dean (in-charge) of the CMCH V. Kumaran said the Rotary’s assistance would go a long way in improving neo-natal care in the hospital. It had promised more projects throughout this year, especially those for checking infant mortality.

Some of these would be implemented with matching grants from the Government under the District Rural Development Agency’s schemes.

The Rotary Club of Coimbatore Gaalaxy had also promised to provide a ventilator costing Rs.5 lakh to the neuro-surgical intensive care unit. Dr. Kumaran said the Rotary had also promised a new eye ward or assistance to upgrade the existing one.
