AIADMK upset by erratic water supply

MANAPPARAI: Councillors belonging to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) staged a walkout from the Manapparai Municipal Council meeting protesting the erratic supply of drinking water in the town for the past one week.

They demanded supply for at least one hour daily to all the wards and take immediate action to plug the breaches in the main line.

Municipality Chairperson E. V. K. Saroja, who presided over the meeting, assured that immediate action would be taken to restore normal supply shortly.

Initiating a discussion, R. Selvi (AIADMK) complained that supply had not been stabilised in her ward for the past one week. She also wanted street lights in Gandhi Nagar to be repaired.

Vice-Chairperson Saroja Mary demanded the supply of drinking water for at least one hour daily. Municipal officials clarified that distribution of water had been affected following breaches in the main lines. Steps were being taken to rectify the same.

A. Shoukath Ali (CPI) said that although he had submitted several petitions demanding restoration of normal supply of drinking water, officials were not responsive. Protesting against what he called official apathy, he walked out.

AIADMK councillors led by Rajarajeswari and P. Ramamoorthy staged a walkout expressing their protest against the inaction on the part of the Municipality in ensuring proper supply of drinking water. K. M. Pitchai (Congress) said snakes were posing a threat in the vicinity of the balwadi in his ward and urged the Municipality to engage snake charmers to catch the reptiles. Earlier, Ms. Rajarajeswari criticised the municipal authorities for not having informed the councillors of the visit of Commissioner of Municipal Administration (CMA), Chennai, Niranjan Mardi to the town for inspecting the developmental works recently.
