Grand galaxy: Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth at the ‘Uliyin Osai’ preview on Tuesday.

CHENNAI: When Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi began the process of thinking of a list of people interested in arts to watch the preview of the movie ‘Uliyin Osai’ (The Music of the Chisel) — based on a period story that he had written four decades ago in the party organ ‘Murasoli’ — he had a few names in mind. About 150, that is.

Film stars, writers, directors, politicians, journalists, Ministers… all were in time for the 5.30 p.m. screening of the movie. Because Mr.Karunanidhi lands up on time. Everywhere and always.

Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, K.S.Ravikumar and Bharatiraaja were among the many from the film world who heaped praise on the Chief Minister after having watched the movie. “To make a [period] movie like this at this time with such care is remarkable and amazing,” said Kamal Haasan, when asked to comment about the movie. He praised Mr.Karunanidhi’s skills and emphasised that he had worked on the project despite all his duties as Chief Minister. “I have a lot to learn from him [Mr.Karunanidhi],” he added.

Rajinikanth, who left the Four Frames preview hall along with Kamal, said that he really had nothing more to add. “Everything that I thought of saying, Kamal has already spoken,” he said. On persisting, he said: “Story, screen play, dialogues are superb. It is a fantastic love story. Excellent.”

Asked if there was any particular dialogue that he liked more than the others, he said that there were far too many.

“This [movie] proves that both Kalaignar’s story and art are timeless,” said director Bharatiraaja. K.S.Ravikumar, who has just completed a difficult assignment, ‘Dasavatharam,’ said there were so many twists and unexpected turns in the movie in the second half and that kept him very interested and absorbed. “The songs are very good and so is the manner in which it has been filmed. I did not expect such a touching movie,” he said.

The film is based on Mr.Karunanidhi’s short story Saarapallam Samundi, written at a time when Dravidian politics used a great deal of film and art to further the cause of unity among the oppressed. This story is no different. The romance between a sculptor and a dancer in the 10th century forms the backdrop for Mr. Karunanidhi’s thesis for the omission of 27 Bharatnatyam dance poses of the original 108 found in the sculptures of the 11th century-built Big Temple, Thanjavur, built by King Raja Raja Chozhan of the Chozha dynasty.

There are six songs in the movie. One has been filmed in the backwaters of Alleppy and another in Jaipur.

Produced by Thiruvottiyur SP Murugesan, the film has Keerthi Chawla, Suja, Vineeth and Sarath Babu in lead roles. Illavenil makes his debut as director while Illayaraja handles the music.
