Medicinal garden in schools

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Social Forestry wing of the Kerala Forest Department plans to plant medicinal plants in select schools of the State. The project will be implemented in association with Oushadhi, a Kerala Government enterprise, said Siddappa, Chief Conservator of Forests (Social Forestry).

In each district, 25 schools will be selected for the project based on the availability of land for setting up the medicinal garden. The children of the schools will also be given saplings of medicinal plants as part of the programme.

“The seedlings are ready for the project. The idea of the project is to create awareness among schoolchildren for protecting trees and encouraging them to plant trees,” Mr. Siddappa said.

The second phase of the Vazhiyora Thanal project began in the city on Monday. The programme is implemented with the cooperation of head-load workers.
