Three held on cheating charges
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: Three young men have been arrested by the North Delhi police for allegedly cheating people on the pretext of arranging bank loans for them.
Ram Kumar Gupta, a shopkeeper, received a phone call on June 25 from a person identifying himself as an executive with a multi-national bank. He offered to arrange a bank loan of Rs.1.39 lakh. Mr. Gupta accepted the offer as he was in dire need of money.
The agent called up again the next day and asked Mr. Gupta to arrange documents like PAN card and Income Tax return certificate. On June 27, a man claiming to be from a bank came to verify the documents and obtained his signatures on an application for the loan. He also took five blank signed cheque leaves as security.
On Sunday, the person called up again and told him that another bank executive would contact him for some more signatures. However, no one turned up. Mr. Gupta later found that the call had been made from a public telephone booth. Suspecting that something was amiss, he contacted his bank and found that Rs.38,000 had already been withdrawn from his account .Based on the complaint, the police arrested Ankit when he was trying to get a cheque cashed. At his instance, the police arrested Gaurav and Rajesh .
