ATTUR: The active participation of people is vital to improve sanitary conditions in the rural areas, Collector N. Mathivanan has said. Participating at a mass contact programme held at Vazhakombai village in Gengavalli taluk recently, the Collector said all the households in rural areas should have individual toilets. The Government was providing financial assistance to construct individual toilets under the Total Sanitation Campaign. People should apply for assistance under the scheme and cooperate with the Government to prevent open defecation. Sanitation is given top priority as it is important for the overall development of the rural areas, he pointed out. People and the officials should work together for the effective implementation of development programmes, he added. Child labourThe Collector called upon the elected representatives of local bodies to take up concerted efforts to abolish child labour in the rural areas. Employing children aged below the age of 14 years would affect their physical and mental health. Steps should be made to make all the villages in the district free from child labour, he stressed. Later, he received about 300 grievance petitions. He also distributed welfare assistance to the tune of Rs. 14.08 lakh to 444 persons. Old-age pensionThe assistance included old-age pension, widow pension and marriage assistance. District Rural Development Agency Project Officer D. Jagannthan, Mahalir Thittam Project Officer A. Selvam, Attur Revenue Divisional Officer Baskarapandian and senior officials were present.
