TANUVAS to seek Rs.675 crore from Centre

Special Correspondent

Funds for animal husbandry, fisheries and dairy development

Permanent building for TANUVAS centre in six months

VELLORE: The Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) has drawn up an ambitious plan at Rs.675 crore for animal husbandry, fisheries and dairy development in Tamil Nadu, which it would submit to the Central government, according to P. Thangaraju, Vice-Chancellor of the university.

Talking to newspersons here on Wednesday, Dr. Thangaraju said that the plan included a proposal for Rs.12 crore for providing training to the poultry, dairy and other livestock farmers in Vellore district to produce value-added products, which would ensure their economic development. This would form part of the District Agricultural Plans for Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts. The university would draw funds from the National Agricultural Development Projects, through which, it would bring about the development of the farmers involved in animal husbandry, fisheries and dairying, by adopting a bottom-up approach, under which plans would be formulated at the grassroots level and taken to the highest policy-making level of the Central government.

The TANUVAS Vice-Chancellor, who earlier had discussions with the District Collector Dharmendra Pratap Yadav regarding the establishment of a permanent building for the TANUVAS Centre in Vellore in the Collectorate complex, said that the district administration has allotted 6000 square feet in the Collectorate for the construction of the permanent building for the TANUVAS Centre, which would house a training hall, Disease Diagnostic Laboratory and exhibition hall to serve the self-help groups, livestock and poultry farmers. A sum of Rs.35 lakh has been allotted for the same. While the TANUVAS has allotted Rs.25 lakh for the building, the Vellore district administration has contributed the balance of Rs.10 lakh. The building, which is expected to be completed by the Public Works Department in six months, would function as a Regional Research Centre in future.

Dr. Thangaraju said that the District Agricultural Plan included a Rs.32-lakh scheme for conducting training programme, workshops and study tours for livestock and poultry farmers, Rs.35 lakh for creation of infrastructure facilities at the Veterinary University Training and Research Centre, Vellore and a propaganda van, and Rs.50 lakh for the establishment of a Veterinary University Training and Research Centre at Tiruvannamalai.

The Vice-Chancellor said that TANUVAS has produced a new vaccine for anthrax, a disease causing mortality in sheep and goats, at its vaccine research centre in Madhavaram. Experimental trials have been conducted in Vellore district.

On successful completion of a Rs.2-lakh pilot project sanctioned by the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) for the preservation of sugarcane tops as cattle fodder in Vellore district, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned Rs.22 lakh to the TANUVAS for the conversion of sugarcane waste into silage.
