Corrections and clarifications

* * A promo (July 2, 2008, page 1) was “Fifty Years of ICAI”, while the main report (“Business” page, July 2, 2008) — “CAs asked to take up global challenges” — said it was the diamond jubilee year of the ICAI. (The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is a statutory body for the regulation of the profession of Chartered Accountants in India.) The promo should have been “Sixty Years of ICAI”.

* * The sixth paragraph in an article “Towards free and fair elections in India” (Op-Ed, July 2, 2008) was “A committee with Union Home Secretary M.N. Vohra as Chairman said in its report that mafia gangs enjoyed the patronage of local level politicians and that some gang members even got elected to the Assemblies and Parliament.” It should have been N.N. Vohra (now Governor of Jammu and Kashmir). (The Vohra (Committee) Report was submitted in October 1993. It studied the problem of the criminalisation of politics and of the nexus among criminals, politicians and bureaucrats in India.)

* * The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “People from all walks of life pay homage to Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw” (July 1, 2008) was “Defence Minister A.K. Antony signs a condolence book after paying homage to Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, at India Gate in New Delhi on Monday. Looking on are Air Force Marshal Arjan Singh, Air Chief Marshal F.H. Major, Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor and Navy Chief Sureesh Mehta.” It should have been Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh, as mentioned in the text.

* * A pointer in a standalone graphic “Ambassador of conscience [Nelson Mandela]” (“Newscape” page, July 1, 2008) was “Recent Years – He [Mandela] marries Graca Machel in 1988”. It should have been 1998 (on his 80th birthday). (Graca Machel is the widow of the late Mozambican President Samora Machel, who died in a plane crash over South Africa in 1986.)

* * The second paragraph in a report “Gear up for polls: TNCC chief” (Tamil Nadu, July 1, 2008) was “In a statement here on Monday, [Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president] Mr. Krishnasswamy wanted them to organise street-corner public meetings and functions in their areas to propagate the Centre’s achievements under the leadership of Prime Minister

Manmohan Gandhi.” The Prime Minister is Dr. Manmohan Singh!

* * The sixth paragraph in a report “They chose less-trodden paths and met with success” (“Newscape” page, June 30, 2008) was “Another interesting story in the book is about a student who chose to set up sugar factories in his native place Belgum in Maharashtra instead of working with some multinational company.” Belgaum, and not Belgum as mentioned in the report, is in Karnataka.

The HR Department of the company, Shree Renuka Sugars Limited, clarifies that it is in Belgaum, Karnataka. (The report was on a book by the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, that deals with stories of 25 of its alumni who are now successful entrepreneurs.)

* * In a column (by Imran Khan) “Pakistan will need a miracle to make the final” (“Sport”, July 2, 2008), a sentence in the sixth paragraph was “The IPL has only six teams when compared to the 20-plus teams in the Ranji Trophy.” There were eight teams in the IPL (Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Punjab, Rajasthan).

* * The third paragraph in a report “Kiwis post record ODI win” (“Sport”, July 2, 2008) was “New Zealand’s 402 for two was its highest ODI score and an opening-wicket stand of 274 runs between Brendon McCullum and James Marshall was the fifth highest for any wicket”, while the scoreboard gave it as “Fall of wickets: 1-266”. The scoreboard is right.
