Arrangements in place for Rath Yatra tomorrow

Sri Jagannadhaswamy temple on the Main Road, Visakhapatnam is being spruced up on Tuesday for the annual Radhostavam. —

VISAKHAPATNAM: The annual ratha yatra of Sri Jagannatha along with Sri Subhadra and Sri Balabhadra of the about 180-year old temple in Town Kotha Road will be held on Friday.

Announcing this at a media conference here on Wednesday, chairman of the temple committee S.V. Ranga Rao said that the rath yatra would be taken on Friday evening up to Turner’s Choultry where the idols would be kept till July 13. Lord Jagannatha would adorn the Dasavatharas during the soujourn.

Chief priest of the temple Edida Venkata Seetharamacharyulu said Lord Jagannatha could be seen in Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parasurama, Rama, Krishna, Seshapanpu and Kalki forms. “This year, we have added Kalki along with Seshapanpu avataram which is a regular feature,” he said. Special pujas, Vedic chanting, Sri Lalithasahasranamam and Bhagavadgita recital and spiritual discourses would be conducted every day at the Turner’s Choultry for the idols. The return ratha yatra would be held July 14 evening to the temple from the Choultry amid kolatam, tappetagullu, nadaswaram and fire works followed by samprokshana and installation of the idols in the temple the next day, he said. Executive officer of the temple Bommakanti Trimurthulu said the estimated expenditure for the festival was Rs.2 lakhs. The revenue last year was Rs.9 lakhs and the temple was being renovated at a cost of Rs.15 lakhs, he disclosed. Other Trustees R. Varalakshmi, B. Gunnamma and V. Eswara Rao were present.
