Third front in State likely, says Narayana

Correspondent

“Communist Party of India not against Chiranjeevi’s entry into politics”

VIZIANAGARAM: Uncertainty over formation of third front, an alternative to Congress and Telugu Desam parties, in the State will end in the next one and half months, according to CPI State secretary K. Narayana. “As the government is not functioning to the extent of people’s aspirations, evolution of a new political front is in the offing. The Left parties have seen the rule of Congress and TDP.”

‘Same policies’

Stating that the policies and programmes of Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and N. Chandrababu Naidu were one and the same, Mr. Narayana told a press conference on Wednesday that following developments in Telugu Desam Party, a new political order in the forthcoming elections was not ruled out. Reacting to reports in a section of the press, he described TDP and TRS as the north and the south poles and expressed doubts over the two parties coming together in the next elections. Disclosing that Lok Satta founder Jayaprakash Narayan had written him a letter before recent by-elections in Telengana region for a mutual understanding, the CPI leader said that he did not reply because the Lok Satta leader was in favour of an agreement on the nuclear deal with the USA and also the diktats of the World Bank. Moreover, he had fielded candidates for Khairatabad and Therlam seats when the CPI and other parties had agreed for unanimity, he said.

On the proposed party by actor Chiranjeevi, he said that the CPI was not against his entry into politics. His party would come to an understanding with the new outfit after studying its policies. With regard to Telangana, he said that the issue had become a political one and the Centre alone could solve the problem.

Round table

State CPI secretary K. Narayana on Wednesday said that the party would fight if the freedom of the press was at stake and advised Manda Krishna Madiga, MRPS leader, to think as a democrat rather than abusing and attacking institutions. He was speaking at the round table organised by the Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists at the Press Club here.

The CPI leader appealed to journalists to be specific on issues and write names instead of reporting vaguely. On torching effigies, he said that a statute body must decide whether such protests were good or bad. He severely condemned the late night arrests of Andhra Jyothi editor and the two other journalists. V.S. Prasad, TDP floor leader in the Municipal Council, said that irritants could be solved through democratic process. Publication of a rejoinder, if sought by the MRPS leader, would have ended the dispute. B.A. Babji, Lok Satta president, D. Atchuta Rao, Press Academy member, and others spoke.
