Succour for Endosulfan victims

Kasaragod: The youth wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami has come forward to help those suffering from the use of Endosulfan in north Kerala.

Project’s State coordinator K.K. Basheer said many had died in recent months due to the use of Endosulfan as a pesticide. On August 15 last year, the Solidarity Endosulfan Project started collecting funds as part of an initiative by the former Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer. It co uld so far mop up Rs.80 lakh.

Of this, Rs.50 lakh had been earmarked for five of the 11 affected panchayats in Kasaragod district. Workers under the Cashew Plantation Corporation in the worst-hit panchayats of Pullur-Periye, Muliyar, Kumbadaje, Enmakaje and Kayyur-Cheemeni will benefit in the coming months, Mr. Basheer said.

“We will ensure that victims and their families do not spend a day without food and the funds are utilised properly,” he added. — PTI
