Marginal dip in applications for medicine

PUDUCHERRY: With the scrapping of the entrance examination for admission to professional courses, the number of candidates applying for engineering courses to the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) has marginally increased this year. Meanwhile, the applications for biology-based courses including MBBS have marginally declined.

According to officials of CENTAC, a total of 6,488 applications, including 1,028 SC/ST candidates, were issued this year for engineering and medical courses. Last year, CENTAC had issued 7,623 applications including 1,025 for SC/ST students.

“When compared to last year, the number of applications issued this year is less by around 1,100. This could be due to the scrapping of entrance examination,” said official sources. CENTAC had started to issue the applications from June 2 and the last date for receipt of filled-in forms was June 23.

For the academic year 2007-2008, CENTAC received 4,058 applications from the Union Territory for engineering courses. A total of 1,061 applications were received from other States under the 15 per cent reservation at Pondicherry Engineering College and Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Karaikal.

“We have received around 4,230 applications for engineering from candidates in Puducherry this year. Over 800 candidates from other States have applied for the engineering stream. The number of students applying for engineering is more now,” he added.

In biology-based courses, which included MBBS, dental, veterinary, nursing, physiotherapy and pharmacy, 2,920 applications were received for this academic year as against 2,932 applicants last year from Puducherry alone.

Usually, the counselling process for admission to medicine and engineering courses were held during the third week of July. But the government had still not decided the actual number of seats available under the government quota in private engineering and medical colleges, official sources said.

“The counselling for admission can start only when the number of seats available is known. The merit list will tentatively be published on July 7,” he said.

The merit list would be based on the student’s marks in Standard XII. For engineering, the aggregate of marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry and Maths would be taken. Marks obtained in Physics, Chemistry and Biology would be calculated for medicine.
