Land for RGUHS: probe likely into payment of money

Government may shift the varsity to some other district

BANGALORE: The State Government is considering ordering a probe into the alleged payment of Rs. 30 crore to a contractor by the Kumaraswamy Government for acquiring land for setting up the campus of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) in Ramanagara.

The previous coalition government headed by Janata Dal (Secular) had decided to shift the campus of the RGUHS from Bangalore to Ramanagaram. It had decided to construct the new campus at a cost of Rs 330 crore on a 100-acre plot.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Minister for Medical Education Ramachandra Gowda said the Kumaraswamy government had paid Rs. 25 crore to Rs. 30 crore to the contractor to complete the land acquisition for establishing the RGUHS campus in Ramanagram. But the contractor had not acquired any land. Now the Government was considering ordering a probe to find out the contractor to whom the money had been paid and the reasons for the delay in the land acquisition process, Mr. Gowda said.

Instead of Ramanagara, the Government was planning to shift the RGUHS campus to some other districts such as Davangere, Dharwad where land was available. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa would take a final decision on the mater soon, the Minister said.

Asked about the appointment of vice-chancellor to RGUHS, he said a search committee has been constituted and Governor Rameshwar Thakur would chair a meeting of the committee next week to finalise the candidate. Former vice-chancellor of Bangalore University M.S. Thimmappa is heading the committee.

Dismissed

Mr. Gowda, who is also district in-charge Minister for Mandya, said Krishna, food inspector of Mandya, had been dismissed from service for indulging in the printing of fake below poverty line ration cards. The official had printed 700 cards and distributed to the ineligible beneficiaries. Mr. Gowda reviewed the progress of various schemes in the district.
