A tourney to instil confidence in them

An irresistible passion to perform that matters a lot

FEAT: Visually challenged persons, who won the title at the State-level cricket tournament in Karur.

KARUR: It was an irresistible passion to perform that prompted visually challenged cricketers to come out with their gusty best at the State-level cricket tournament conducted by the Ugam Trust at CSI ground in Karur recently.

The two-day tournament saw participation of five teams – Poonamalli Government Higher Secondary School for Blind, Chennai, St. Joseph’s HSS for Blind, Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu Cultural Sports and Educational Trust (TNCSE), Chennai, Royal Stars Team, Madurai, and Madurai City Team.

The eleven players in a team for this tournament for which underarm bowling is the norm comprised four fully blind cricketers, three partially blind and four with low vision.

In the finals between TNCSE and Madurai City Team, the latter prevailed over the former with a thumping nine-wicket victory. Arunachalam of the winning team was adjudged the ‘Man of the Series’ for scoring 151 runs in the tournament. His teammate Ramesh was declared the ‘Man of the Final.’

“This is for the first time we had conducted a State-level cricket tournament for the visually challenged and the response was encouraging. We believe that such tourneys will instil confidence in them,” said managing trustee A. Anandan.

The trust had earlier conducted chess tournaments and ‘adapted’ volleyball tournaments, which is played by rolling the ball under the net.

At the valediction, the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), Karur, K. Mookkiyah gave away the prizes in the presence of the Assistant Commissioner, Commercial Taxes, Karur, K. Kaliamurthy.
