Trade unions plan strike
Special Correspondent
BANGALORE: The Joint Committee of Trade Unions will launch an all-India general strike on August 20 in protest against the rise in prices of essential commodities, and the “anti-poor” policies of the United Progressive Alliance Government.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, V.J.K. Nair, State secretary of the of Communist Party of India (Marxist), said that the prices of essential goods were skyrocketing owing to the policies of the Centre.
One of the main reasons for inflation was the rise in the cost of petroleum prices. The committee wanted the Centre to bring down the central excise duty on petroleum products, he said.
