Kodagu people will get special gifts in the budget: MLA Officials told to respond to peoples’ woes AMMATHI (KODAGU DTISTRICT): The Bharatiya Janata Party leadership in the State has not neglected Kodagu, Virajpet MLA K.G. Bopaiah said here on Wednesday. He was addressing a gathering of party workers after being felicitated by the Ammathi hobli BJP workers, on the Kodava Samaja premises here. Mr. Bopaiah’s reference came in the wake of dissatisfaction that Kodagu was not given representation in the State Cabinet despite BJP candidates winning the two Assembly constituencies in the district. Resolving the “Bane” land issue by removing the conditions stated in the two controversial revenue circulars within seven days of coming to power was a vindication of the Government’s resolve, he said. The tree rights issue remains to be tackled. The matter involving relocation of tribal people would have to be dealt with in detail, he said. Tribal people, who nursed a unique ancient culture, could not be relocated outside forests and the district, Mr. Bopaiah added. He would visit the BJP office here once a month to listen to the people of Ammathi hobli, Mr. Bopaiah said and thanked the party workers for the unity shown to ensure his victory in the Assembly elections. The MLA said that people from different areas in the constituency came to him with applications seeking sites, good roads and drinking water facility. The problems did not crop up overnight, he said and added that funds released by the Government to the Kodagu Zilla Panchayat for maintenance of roads and providing drinking water had lapsed. This spoke of the apathy of the zilla panchayat which was being ruled by the Congress, he charged. There would be some “special gifts” to the people of Kodagu in the budget, Mr. Bopaiah said and added that special road funds recommended by the Nanjundappa Committee must be established for the district. StadiumThere was a move to construct a stadium for the conduct of the annual Kodagu Family Hockey Festival in the district instead of organising it at different places every year, he said. Bose Devaiah, former president of the Gonicoppa Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee, had requested Mr. Bopaiah in this regard earlier. The MLA directed government officials to respond to the woes of people. The police had been told to deal strictly with those involved in illegal transport of cattle to Kerala, he said. On another plea of Mr. Devaiah, Mr. Bopaiah said that the Government would provide financial assistance to those who were interested in establishing “goshalas” in Kodagu. Mr. Bopaiah blamed the Governor’s administration during the President’s Rule for throwing up many problems in the State just before the BJP assumed power. The Governor’s office functioned as the Congress office, he charged. Mr. Devaiah presented a list of demands on behalf of the people of Ammathi hobli, including upgrading the revenue office here. Senior party worker M.G. Madappa presided over the function and spoke. Mr. Bopaiah was brought in a procession from Ammathi town to the venue. M.M. Ravindra, president of the Virajpet taluk unit of the BJP, and Ravi Kushalappa, general secretary of the Kodagu unit of the party, spoke.
