‘Some wardens have given incorrect information on the number of students’ Kumbaiah says officials have cleared cheques without checking facts Chitradurga: M. Kumbaiah, member, Karnataka State Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission has said that over 90 per cent of the Social Welfare Department hostels in the district are poorly managed. Mr. Kumbaiah was speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday after inspecting the Government Girls Post-Matriculation Hostel. He said that many of the hostels he visited did not have basic facilities. “The hostels were unclean and the quality of food served is poor,” he said. Mr. Kumbaiah said that in many of the hostels, the wardens gave him incorrect information on the number of students staying there. Fake documentsCiting an example, Mr. Kumbaiah said that in the Bhovi Hostel in Hosadurga taluk, the warden said that they were about 40 students, but in reality there were none. “Fake documents have been created to embezzle government funds,” he charged. “In Holalkere taluk, there is hostel which exists only on paper,” he added. Mr. Kumbaiah held officials of the Social Welfare Department and the zilla and taluk panchayats responsible for the misuse of funds, as they had cleared the cheques for the hostels without checking the facts. Mr. Kumbaiah said he would submit a report to the Government recommending legal action against the erring officials. “I will recommend that the Government deduct the salaries of the officials to compensate for the loss being incurred, besides suggesting that the Government stop or reduce the funds being released to the department,” he said.
