No work: Lorries lined up on National Highway 13 as part of the strike in Chitradurga on Wednesday. Chitradurga: Joining the nationwide agitation by lorry owners, the District Lorry Owners’ Association here on Wednesday staged a dharna on National Highway 13. Hundreds of lorries were seen parked on the road. The lorry owners were protesting against the Karnataka High Court’s order on compulsory installation of speed governors. They were also demanding that the Government cancel the service tax. Speaking to The Hindu, president of the District Lorry Owners’ Association, Swamy, said that earlier only the consigner and consignee paid the tax, but the Government had now brought the lorry owners under the tax ambit. The lorry owners were also protesting against the increasing prices of diesel. They also sought a reduction in the toll tax. Mr. Swamy said that a delegation of the association had visited Delhi to apprise the Union Government of the situation. “The first round of discussions had not yielded any result. We are still negotiating with the Union Government. We will continue to protest till a solution emerges,” he said.
