K. Vijayarama Rao HYDERABAD: Protest against Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) project is showing signs of gathering momentum with former Telugu Desam Minister K. Vijayarama Rao threatening to take ‘Direct Action’ from July 4, the day on which tenders for the project are scheduled to be opened. At a meeting on HMR organised by Citizens for a Better Public Transport in Hyderabad on Wednesday, Mr. Rao demanded immediate stalling of tender process. The former Khairatabad MLA said that the project was conceived without taking the overall perspective of transportation in Hyderabad. “There was no consultation, no transparency and there’s no elected body for GHMC to discuss. Authorities should stop the tender process or else we will take to streets. Metro rail should be a part of the transport solution and not the only solution for traffic congestion,” he said. Mr. Rao felt that MMTS phase-II along with metro rail at select locations is the ideal way to solve the traffic problem. “They have envisaged the project without considering nearby regions of Telangana. Taking up such a costly project is a bad idea. Why so much ambiguity? It raises strong doubts on the integrity of people behind the project,” he said. The president for TDP’s GHMC cell felt that metro rail will get everybody’s endorsement if authorities had bothered to consult the stake holders. “TDP in principle had okayed the metro rail project but as part of a bigger plan to decongest the city. Strengthening bus system, completing MMTS phase two, connecting nearby towns to Hyderabad and then taking up metro rail at select places is the ideal plan,” he explained. The meeting was attended by several members from various NGOs from the twin cities.
