The exhibition to be held in Chennai aims to popularise silk and cotton saris.

CHENNAI: It is now possible to design your own silk sari and get it woven by one of the silk weavers’ co-operative societies in the State within 30 days and wear it too.

As a first step in this direction, around 25-30 handloom weavers’ cooperative societies have joined hands to conduct a handloom silk and cotton sari exhibition-cum-sale at Sri Kumaran Anugraha Kalyana Mandapam on Arcot Road here from July 5 to 7.

At the expo, silk saris starting from Rs 2,000 woven from Kancheepuram, Arani, Salem, Thirubuvanam, and Rasipuram; cotton saris starting from Rs 200, woven from Uraiyur, Jayamkondam, Vanavasi, Thoppur, Aruppukottai, Madurai, Paramakudi and Sirumugai; and home décor and home textiles from Erode and Karur will be put on sale.

Talking to presspersons on Tuesday, Handlooms and Textiles Director Jaya said, “This expo is meant to popularise silk and cotton saris. Over 1,000 varieties of saris worth over Rs 70 lakh will be on sale. To help the buyer to analyse the presence of gold in the silk sari, it has been decided to install XRF analyser at the venue. The buyer can make use of this facility by paying Rs 10 per test.”

“This expo would enable us to clear goods worth Rs 50 lakh. Certain varieties of silk saris will be sold at a discount of up to 50 per cent. Besides, credit cards and debit cards will be accepted for making payments,” she said. C. Kodantham, a weaver from Kancheepuram Silk Weavers Cooperative Society will be introducing ‘Puthiya Alaigal’ silk sari that would cost around Rs 30,000.

Last year, handloom weavers’ cooperative societies in the State sold goods worth Rs 869.59 crore, of which cotton products accounted for Rs 705.96 crore and silk accounted for Rs 163.63 crore. Home decors worth Rs 275 crore are being exported every year.
