Port workers serve strike notice

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: All five major unions in Chennai Port Trust have served notice for an indefinite strike by port workers from July 16.

The strike call was in support of the workers’ demands for early completion of wage talks by the port administration, immediate payment of interim relief as agreed by the management, merger of 50 per cent of dearness allowance with basic pay and payment of bonus arrears.

The INTUC, the AITUC, and the HMS served notices individually on Tuesday and the CITU and HMS (Shanti Patel wing) served the notice on Wednesday.

V. Rajamohan of AITUC said trade unions in all major ports had served strike notices. He said the port administration had initiated talks at the Secretary level with representatives of unions on July 8 in New Delhi.

If no settlement was reached in the talks, the workers would go on an indefinite strike from July 16, Mr. Rajamohan said.
