Opposition does well in civic polls

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The two Opposition parties — the Trinamool Congress and the Congress — have won in seven of the 13 municipalities, elections to which were held on June 29.

While the Trinamool Congress wrested control of two municipalities from the Left Front, the Congress did so in one. The Opposition won a majority of the seats in a municipality that was being run with the support of the Left Front.

The results, announced on Wednesday, are being considered significant as the polls were held six weeks after last month’s panchayat elections that saw the Trinamool Congress making considerable inroads in sections of the State’s rural belt.
