When Aparna A. Menon spoke before her classmates, she was not audible at the back row of the class. Aparna also had to quite often look into The Hindu she was holding while addressing the class. “You need to be audible to the crowd. If you are reading out of the paper, you may not be able to make eye contact with the audience,” she was told. It was a valuable piece of information for Aparna as well as the other students of Class 6 of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Vaduthala. The students were exposed to the fundamentals of public speaking in their classroom as part of the “The Hindu Newspaper in Education Programme.” The programme is being undertaken in a large number of schools in the city for moulding the young minds. Rohita Mohan read out from the newspaper the issue relating to Chinese weapons. She was one of the students of the class who got actively involved in the interactive session that was held on Wednesday. What are the qualities required for a good public speaker, the children were asked. “He should be smart,” answered Nandagopal M. Nambiar. You need to have ideas, people should understand what you are speaking, the public speaker should be bold… thus ran suggestions from the students. “Sound modulation,” alerted another young and alert mind. The public speaker should also focus on sound modulation, the children were told. The class ended with the promise that during the next session, every student will be given the opportunity to address the class. They were also asked to come prepared for the session. “Yes,” said the class in one voice. The Hindu NIE Team
