Rains setting in
Staff Reporter
Bangalore: Just as Bangaloreans had resigned themselves to a truant monsoon last month, the city was lashed by heavy rains on Wednesday. The spell lasted well over three hours, with the city receiving 16 mm and the airport 8.6 mm of rainfall.
This is the heaviest rainfall the city has received this season since the onset of monsoon on June 1, said A. Muthuchami, director of the Meteorological Centre here.
Bangalore had recorded 110 mm of rain in just the first two days of June – after which the monsoon appeared to have all but bypassed the city, which had to make do with only trace rain for the rest of the month. July could bring more rain to the city than did June. While the normal rain for June was 81 mm, it was 110 mm for July, Mr. Muthuchami said. The most active monsoon months for the city, however, were September and October, he added.
For the next two days, the monsoon, which had so far been most active over coastal Karnataka and the Ghat regions, would bring more rain to the interior parts of Karnataka, including Bangalore, said Mr. Muthuchami.
The forecast for the next two days is generally cloudy skies with thundershowers.
