BANGALORE: Lorry operators continued their strike that started on Tuesday, following failure of talks with Union Minister for Highways and Road Transport T.R. Balu in Delhi on Wednesday.

In a release, Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents Associations president G.R. Shanmugappa and secretary B.V. Narayanappa said the Minister had rejected their demand for abolition of increase in toll from Rs. 1.3 to Rs. 2.05 a km.

This was despite the Centre getting back Rs. 63,500 crore invested on Golden Quadrilateral project through toll and cess on diesel, they said.

In Karnataka, the impact was yet to be felt on day one as supply and availability of essential commodities were not affected. The federation said nearly 2.8 lakh trucks and 1.7 lakh light commercial vehicles were off the road affecting movement of commodities.

At the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), Yeshwanthpur in the city, nearly 260 trucks had arrived in the morning carrying various commodities. APMC secretary M.A. Nagaraj told The Hindu that there was not much impact on Wednesday.

About 155 trucks left the APMC yard with commodities. A trader said because of non-transportation of commodities, prices of onion and potato, which were received on Tuesday, came down by Rs. 50 to Rs. 100 a quintal by evening.

Meanwhile, supply of fruits and vegetables to the city too was not much affected with traders in K.R. Market area doing business as usual.
