Priority for quality PU education

Staff Reporter

Refresher courses for lecturers favoured

Bangalore: Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri on Wednesday visited the Department of Pre-University Education and directed officials to take steps to improve the quality of education and results.

“Our priority should be to work towards improving quality in all respects – education that is imparted, infrastructure, and so on. The Government will support this endeavour,” he said.

Mr. Kageri was apprised of programmes taken up to improve infrastructure in 1,200 government pre-university colleges in the State.

S.G. Hedge, Commissioner, PU Department, told the Minister that the department would be equipped to cater to the needs of students. Mr. Hedge said 4,000 posts of lecturer were vacant and recruitment was last held in 1996. He said he had requested the KPSC to call for applications and fill a few posts through direct recruitment. “They have assured us of conducting the examination for the lecturers by this month end,” he said.

With regard to the poor second PU results, the Minister said the department must work towards improving the results for next year. The department should conduct refresher courses for PU lecturers also. The department lacked a wing for academics. “Schools have Directorate of State Education Research and Training to look into the syllabus, teachers’ training and so on. We have sent a proposal in this regard to the Government,” he said.
