For allegedly using forged credit cards causing losses to banks

Police claim to have seized expensive articles bought by them

NEW DELHI: Three Nigerians have been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police for allegedly using forged credit cards causing financial losses to banks. The police claim to have seized from them seven fake credit cards and several expensive articles bought through them.

A multi-national bank recently lodged a complaint with the Crime Branch that fake credit cards had been used in its Electronic Data Capture machines installed at a South Extension shop. Investigations led to the police to zero in on three Nigerian nationals who had allegedly been using the fake cards to buy electronic goods and other articles.

Acting on a tip-off that they would again come to make purchases on Tuesday, the police laid a trap and arrested them. They were identified as Abayomi Anifowoshe (30) Evans Amathila Imadonmwinyi (32) and Bawwa (29).

During interrogation, the three purportedly disclosed that they had obtained the credit cards from one of their friends back in Nigeria.

The police seized the credit cards, a laptop and seven mobile phones from their possession. The laptop allegedly contained data on about 200 international credit cards. One of the phones of the accused also contained data of six credit cards in the form of messages sent from a Kenya-based mobile phone.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) A. S. Cheema said: “The extent of the financial transactions through the fake cards is being ascertained with the help of the credit card issuing companies.”

Ailing wife

He said Abayomi came to Mumbai on June 13 on the pretext of getting his ailing wife treated. He then came to Delhi and started living with Bawwa.
