Local traders’ organisations have agreed to participate in the bandh Party workers instructed to persuade people to join the strike NEW DELHI: Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan on Wednesday appealed to the Capital’s citizens to join the nationwide bandh call issued by the party to protest against cancellation of land allotted to the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board. Dr. Vardhan said all commercial, social and religious organisations of Delhi should observe bandh to compel the State Government to return the land allotted to the Shrine Board. The State BJP leader also instructed his party workers to approach the people of Delhi and persuade them to join the strike. In support of the BJP’s call for bandh, local traders’ organisations like Mercantile Association, Khari Baoli Merchants’ Association, Sadar Bazar Federation, Trans-Yamuna Commercial Establishments and the West Delhi Traders Union have agreed to participate in the bandh. Meanwhile, lending support to the nationwide bandh call, the Confederation of All-India Traders also announced closure of major wholesale markets and retail centres in the Capital on Thursday. Delhi State Cofederation secretary Narender Madan said markets in Chandni Chowk, Chawri Bazar, Ajmeri Gate, Lajpat Rai Market, Bhagirath Palace, Rajouri Garden, Jail Road, Tilak Nagar, Uttam Nagar, Rohini, Ashok Vihar, Pitampura, Shalimar Bagh, G. T. Karnal Road, Naraina, Kirti Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, South Extension, Kalkaji, Yusuf Sarai, Vikas Marg, Mayur Vihar, Krishna Nagar, Shahdara and Gandhi Nagar as well as other retail markets would remain closed on Thursday. This would mean that commercial establishments dealing in clothes, motor spare parts, consumer durables, foodgrains, electrical and electronics, hardware, pharmaceuticals, medicines, stationery, textile, readymade garments and other materials would remain closed.
