Horticultural farm workers threaten stir

VELLORE: The Tamil Nadu Government Horticultural Farm Workers’ Association has warned that it will resort to an agitation if the government does not take steps to fully implement, within 15 days, a Government Order on regularisation of 1,083 workers employed in government horticultural farms for more than 10 years.

Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, C. Rajavelu, State honorary president of the association, said that through the G.O. No.494 of the Agriculture Department, dated November 29, 2007, the government ordered that all the 1,083 farm workers employed as daily wage labourers in the government horticultural farms for more than 10 years as on January 1, 2006 should be appointed as farm workers in Tamil Nadu Horticultural Development Agency (TANHODA), their services should be regularised as per rules and regulations of the TANHODA and that they should be placed on the time scale pay of Rs.1300-20-1500-25-2000 from the date of the order.

J. Chinnaraj, State president of the association, C. Thandavamoorthy, district president of Tamil Nadu Government All Department Employees’ Union, and Mr. Rajavelu said the G.O. issued has not been implemented in any of the districts, except Nilgiris, Pudukottai and Cuddalore, though seven months have elapsed after the issue of the order.

The union would conduct agitations throughout the State condemning the attitude of the officials of the Horticulture Department responsible for the failure to implement the G.O. in other districts if the order was not implemented in the remaining districts within 15 days.

The union, in a memorandum, urged the Chief Minister to direct the officials concerned to expedite the total implementation of the order.
