Naveen writes to his Andhra counterpart

Special Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday wrote to his Andhra Pradesh counterpart Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy stating that police of both States would continue their action against naxalites in the days to come.

The police of both States had been jointly fighting the Maoist menace. The same efforts would continue in the future, Mr. Patnaik said in his letter.

Expressing deep regret over the death of the Greyhound jawans in the Maoist attack in Malkangiri district, Mr. Patnaik said that his Government would pay Rs. 2 lakhs each to the next of the kin of the jawans who were killed in the attack.

The Chief Minister said he had directed the State police to extend all cooperation in the ongoing rescue operation in Chitrakonda reservoir where many jawans were still missing.

Mr. Patnaik wrote to Mr. Reddy after his Government came under criticism for its handling of the situation in the wake of Sunday’s Maoist attack.
