dated July 4, 1958: Taxation policy

The tendency among certain sections of the people, not laymen but economists and others, to talk in terms of devaluation of the Rupee was disapproved by Mr. Morarji Desai, Union Finance Minister, addressing the annual general meeting of the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce, in Calcutta on July 2. Mr. Desai told businessmen that the country’s economic development was the joint responsibility of the businessmen, the Government and the public and by far the greatest burden was borne by the public.
