Gold thief argues his own case in vain

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: A 54-year-old man fond of hanging around temples has been found guilty of not only helping himself with the temples’ gold but also that from the homes of those he struck friendship.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vasant Kumar on Wednesday convicted Khoja Nagaraj, a resident of K.G. Halli, holding him guilty of committing theft of ornaments from Bhuvaneshwari Temple in Dasarahalli. The Magistrate sentenced him to undergo three years of simple imprisonment and pay Rs. 3,000 as fine for each of the offence under Section 380 and Section 454 of the Indian Penal Code.

The Bhuvaneshwari Temple theft was one among the several he has been accused of committing.

The police caught Nagaraja following the theft of Rs. 70,000 worth temple jewellery from the Bhuvaneshwari temple in April 2007. Despite having an advocate, Nagaraja cross-examined most of the prosecution witnesses and submitted his arguments in detail.

During the hearing on the sentence on Wednesday, Public Prosecutor Narayana M. Hegde submitted to the court about similar offences committed by Nagaraja.
