Technologists told to work on energy needs of the country

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), to commemorate its centenary year, is organising a three-day conference: “IISc Centenary – International Conference on Advances in Mechanical Engineering (IC-ICAME).”

The conference, organised by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was inaugurated on Wednesday by IISc Director P. Balaram along with scientist A. Ramachandran and department head J.H. Arakeri.

In his address, Prof. Ramachandran called upon scientists and engineers to focus on next generation energy technologies to meet the needs of a growing population and combat environment problems.

‘Be independent’

“Experts should work independent of government policies and work towards meeting the country’s needs. The most important issues that need attention will be water and power,” Prof. Ramachandran said.

The conference will include a number of invited lectures from eminent researchers in various fields of mechanical engineering as well as over 200 papers contributed by young researchers.

The IC-ICAME is aimed at bringing into focus the new developments and challenges in different fields of mechanical engineering, such as mechanical systems, material science and nanotechnology, thermal sciences and fluid mechanics, and vibrations and acoustics.
