All schools in dilapidated buildings to be shifted

Bangalore: Taking a serious view of the death of a student following the collapse of a school building at Bellary two days ago, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri on Thursday said that the schools — government, aided and unaided functioning in dilapidated buildings in the State would be shifted to safe places..

Speaking to reporters, the Minister said that he was concerned about the safety of children studying in such school buildings and that such accidents should not recur anywhere in the state. He said that he had directed the Deputy Directors of Public Instruction and Block Education Officers to constitute teams of officers for assessing the condition of the buildings.

Based on the reports of the teams, which was expected in a month, action would be initiated to shift the schools to safe places, he added.

About the Karnataka High Court judgment on the English medium schools, the Minister said that the Government was yet to get a copy of the same. Mr. Kageri said that he would discuss the issue with the Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and all those concerned before taking any decision on it. He said that the Bharatiya Janata Party Government was committed to the State’s language policy.

When his attention was drawn to the hardship faced by students appearing for the Pre-University supplementary examinations, especially in the districts owing to the Bharat Bandh, the Minister said that he had instructed the officials to consider whether re-exam could be held for those who could not attend it. He made it clear that there was no need for holding re-exam for all such students. He assured that the parents/guardians of such students need not worry.

The Minister said that he had requested Mr. Yeddyurappa, who also holds the finance portfolio for considering enhancement of the allocation to his department.
