Export of maize banned

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday banned the export of maize till October 15, 2008.

The move will help increase its availability in the domestic market and check prices of corn, poultry and other products. The notification issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said the ban was imposed with immediate effect.

Maize prices went up by 40 per cent, from Rs.700 a quintal in January to Rs.970 in July despite a bumper crop last fiscal. This move is also likely to help contain inflation.
