KOCHI: Four years ago, when P.S. Shanil went to the Thrissur District Sports Council gym to try out some fitness workouts, his eyes fell on the hardworking K.V.Latheesh. National powerlifting champion Latheesh, who went on to win a medal at the junior World Championship, took Shanil under his wings, handing out quality tips and frequently inspiring him. Good performanceOn Thursday evening, a few minutes after Latheesh comfortably won the 67.5kg honours, the 21-year-old Shanil shattered three Kerala records on his way to the 75kg title in the RSC State senior powerlifting championship at the Regional Sports Centre here. Shanil, the varsities National champion, broke the State marks in the squat, deadlift and total. Another Thrissur youngster, 18-year-old Vishnu Das broke three State records while the taking the 75-kg crown in the sub-junior State championship which is being held simultaneously. Arjuna Awardee P.J. Joseph inaugurated the two-day championship. The results (read as team, squat, bench press, dead lift and total): Men: 56 kg: 1. V.J. Jojy (Alp, 200, 120, 225, 545 kg), 2. A.B. Latheesh (Tsr, 250, 140, 250, 640 kg), 2. Bijeesh (Tsr), 3. Varghese Ronald (Ekm); 75 kg: 1. P.S. Shanil (Tsr, 300 NR, 140, 305 NR, 745 NR), 2. A.Nithinkumar (Kzd), 3. Vincent (Alp). Sub-junior boys, 52 kg: 1. C. Sooraj (Kzd, 130, 65, 160, 355), 2. V.V. Vaisak (Tsr), 3. P. Rajithlal (Ktm); 56 kg: 1. Vimal Surendran (Kzd, 130, 75, 195 NR, 400), 2. M.R. Rahul (Tsr), 3.
