District headquarter cities to be covered in first phase
BSNL hopes to cover 40 tier II cities and towns

BANGALORE: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) will soon expand its EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimised) connectivity in the State to provide customers better access to wireless broadband Internet services.

BSNL provides wireless broadband only in Bangalore where 43 base transmission stations (BTS) have been set up, making it one of the best EV-DO connected cities in the country.

BSNL is now getting ready to provide EV-DO connectivity in 40 tier-II cities and towns in the State.

P. Raghavan, General Manager (Development), Karnataka Circle, BSNL, said indent for the equipment had been placed with ZTE, based in China, and BSNL had identified a few places in the State for setting up base transmission stations. The design for the stations had been finalised.

First phase

Mr. Raghavan said that district headquarter cities would be covered first in the first phase. Each of them would have one BTS to begin with. More would be set up if required. Each BTS could serve 750 customers, he said.

BSNL is initially targeting cities such as Mangalore, Hubli, Gulbarga, Udupi, Shimoga, Bellary and Mysore. The expansion will be completed by the last quarter of the year.

In the EV-DO coverage area, laptop users can use a Network Interface Card (NIC) to connect to the Internet at a speed of 144 kbps.

Mr. Raghavan said that the EV-DO expansion in Bangalore was in its last phase. The areas covered by the EV-DO base transmission stations are Majestic, Institution of Engineers, City Market, Malleswaram, Koramangala, BTM Layout, R.T. Nagar, Kengeri, K.R. Puram, Electronics City, Padmanabhanagar, Yelahanka, Sanjaynagar, Peenya , Jalahalli, HSR Layout, Mysore Road, Vijaynagar and Yeshwanthpur.
