BJP ready for BBMP elections, says Ashok

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Minister for Transport R. Ashok has said the Bharatiya Janata Party is ready to face elections to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council.

The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday directed the State Government to hold elections to the BBMP council within three months.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Ashok, who is the Minister in charge of Bangalore Urban district, said elections would be held after redrawing the wards following the formation of Greater Bangalore. Each of the new wards would cover a population of around 40,000.

He said the elections would be held after the revision of electoral rolls. The electoral rolls would have to be revised and the constituencies (wards) redrawn following the merger of outlying areas with the BMP leading to the constitution of the BBMP. The wards had been formed based on the 2001 Census.
