Capital’s demand shoots up

NEW DELHI: The Capital’s demand for power shot up to 3,987 MW on Thursday, the highest so far this year.

According to officials of the Delhi Government’s Power Department, the peak load on the system was recorded at 4-09 p.m., which was up from 3,825 MW on Wednesday.

The rise in demand for power has been attributed to the hot and humid weather.

“The temperature was about 38.4 degree Celsius and the relative humidity was 52 per cent. The demand for power always increases when temperature and the humidity goes up. We had to overdraw from the Northern Grid to meet the city’s demand for power,” said a Delhi Transco Limited official. The city’s own generation stood at 1,190 MW.

There were protests at Uttam Nagar in West Delhi over prolonged power cuts for the past three days. On Wednesday night the residents took to the streets to protest against power cuts ranging from six to eight hours.

While the residents complained of poor service, the power distribution company BSES claimed that the area was a high theft-prone zone and because of over-consumption of energy, power cuts were caused by frequent tripping of lines.
