IIT Delhi revokes termination of three students

NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, which was in news recently for alleged caste bias, has revoked the termination of three students, including two from the Scheduled Castes, who were asked to leave the institution in view of their “very poor performance”. Of these, 11 belonged to the SC category, one to the Scheduled Tribes and eight were general category students.

Recently, the National Commission for the Scheduled Castes had summoned IIT Delhi Director Surendra Prasad on a complaint that the administration had “deliberately handpicked” the students from the SC/ST communities.

“The Commission summoned the Director and advised him to review the matter. He consulted the Executive Committee of the Senate and on its advice constituted a special review committee under the chairmanship of one of our highly respected emeritus professors,” said an official communication from the IIT Delhi Registrar on Wednesday.

Records examined

“The committee held several meetings during which they examined all the available records and invited each affected student individually (and his/her parents) to discuss their respective cases. After examining the records, it determined that all applicable academic and administrative procedures have been followed in all cases without exception,” it added.

However, in three cases, it recommended that a lenient view be taken “in view of the special circumstances which resulted in their falling short of the credit requirements marginally”. “Furthermore, one SC student and two students from the general category are eligible for award of a diploma of the Institute as per the established norms. Incidentally it has now been found that one of the 11 SC students had left the Institute on his own accord without informing the authorities,” the Registrar said.
