Condition of ‘stillborn’ baby critical

Staff Reporter

KOLKATA: The condition of the baby boy, who was found to be alive less than 12 hours after it was declared stillborn on Tuesday, remains “very critical.”

A medical bulletin issued here on Thursday by the Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI), where the baby is being treated, said its very poor urine output was the major cause of concern. The condition of the baby, which is on maximal support to sustain all its organs, might deteriorate further if the condition prevailed, it pointed out.

The baby had been brought to the hospital from the Belle Vue clinic where it was born on Tuesday night.

Its father, Manas Kumar Das, said, “We have got the birth certificate from the Belle Vue clinic and will initiate legal action against the clinic for its medical negligence on Friday.”

Belle Vue clinic authorities, however, denied any knowledge of negligence on the part of its doctors involved in the birth of the baby and said that it was a case of “suspended animation where the newborn baby does not respond to treatment even if it is alive.” They said that an internal enquiry had been started to scrutinise the fault of the staff, if any.
