Kempaiah passes away
BANGALORE: Two-time Olympian Mariyappa Kempaiah died of a prolonged illness.
The ace football midfielder, who has been suffering from acute diabetes and had both his legs amputated, died at the Manipal Hospitals on Wednesday night.
He was 78 and leaves behind wife Nanjamma, a son and two daughters. One of his daughters, Suma, represented Karnataka in hockey.
Kempaiah was a gifted footballer and represented India in both the Melbourne (1956) and Rome (1960) and had a long stint with Mohun Bagan and then with East Bengal.
He represented the erstwhile Mysore State from 1953 to 1955. — Special Correspondent
