CHENNAI. A youth who was chased by the police went up a three-storied building at Kilpauk and refused to come down for about three hours early on Thursday.

When the police tried to get closer, he held a knife to his throat and threatened to kill himself. After long persuasion and with the intervention of Fire and Rescue Service personnel, the youth was brought down and taken into custody.

The police said two youths, identified as Saran (24) of Tirupati and his friend Velu (24) of Kannappar Thidal, were seen threatening a shopkeeper at knife-point to part with money at Kilpauk. On seeing a police patrol vehicle, they tried to flee.

While the police managed to apprehend Saran, his friend took to his heels. A couple of police constables chased Velu who took the stairs of a residential apartment on Taylors Road and climbed on to the water tank.

When senior police officials reached the spot and urged Velu to come down, he demanded that they give in writing that no case would be booked against him and that he would not be beaten up at the police station.

At around 3.10 a.m., the police managed to bring down Velu who was taken to the Kilpauk police station.

“We managed to bring him down and offered him dinner as he was hungry. The two were involved in many theft cases in the Vepery, Basin Bridge, Vyasarpadi and Periamet police station limits,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (Triplicane) K. Krishnamurthy said. The two were produced in a city court and remanded in judicial custody.
