Greetings: Additional Director-General of Police (Prisons) R. Natraj welcoming the leader of the visiting MPs’ team Naveen Jindal at Puzhal Central Prison on Thursday. — CHENNAI: A Central team of Members of Parliament, which visited the Puzhal Central Prison here on Thursday, said it was one of the best maintained jails. Additional Director-General of Police (Prisons) R. Natraj told The Hindu that the team, led by Naveen Jindal, comprising ‘Tiruchi’ Siva and others, inspected various development works being undertaken under the ‘Modernisation of Prison’ scheme. The team interacted with a cross-section of inmates who expressed satisfaction over the facilities at the prison. “They [MPs] said this is one of the best maintained prisons in the country and wanted the model to be emulated in other places.” Mr. Natraj said a proposal was put forward before the team for installing mobile phone jammers, electronic gadgets for access control, upgradation of sub-jails to district jails (in a phased manner) and construction of new prison complexes in Tamil Nadu. A presentation on the financial and physical achievement for the funds already allotted was also made. “The MPs have assured to take up the proposal at the appropriate level for consideration. The team met the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary and the Home Secretary and briefed them about the visit,” he said. The Puzhal prison that presently houses about 2,800 inmates was constructed at the cost of Rs.77 crore and opened in 2006. It has three prisons on its 212-acre campus, including an exclusive prison for women and a high-security block, prison sources added.
